The Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX), formerly known as the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX), is an independent agency governed by the state of Florida. Established in 1994, GMX operates and maintains five expressways within Miami-Dade County, all of which are all-electronic toll roads requiring the use of SunPass or a “toll-by-plate” program.
Expressways Managed by GMX:
- State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway): A major east–west highway connecting the western suburbs of Miami to the downtown area.
- State Road 112 (Airport Expressway): Provides access between Miami International Airport and Interstate 95, extending eastward to Miami Beach.
- State Road 874 (Don Shula Expressway): Serves as a north–south route in southern Miami-Dade County, linking the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike to the Palmetto Expressway.
- State Road 878 (Snapper Creek Expressway): A short connector between SR 874 and US Route 1 near South Miami.
- State Road 924 (Gratigny Parkway): An east–west expressway in northern Miami-Dade County, connecting Interstate 75 and the Palmetto Expressway to North Miami.
Recent Developments:
In 2019, the state of Florida initiated a takeover of MDX, leading to the establishment of GMX. By August 2023, a judge ruled that operations were to be taken over by GMX. Since then, GMX has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of these expressways.
In October 2024, GMX celebrated the completion of its first major construction project: the State Road 836/Dolphin Expressway and Florida’s Turnpike Ramp Connections. This project is designed to improve travel times and alleviate congestion in the area.
Tolling System:
All GMX expressways utilize an all-electronic tolling system, eliminating cash payments. Motorists can pay tolls using SunPass transponders or via the toll-by-plate program, with the latter incurring higher costs. This system aims to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion on the expressways.
